Adoption

At the Wilson Parrot Foundation, we want to make the best decision for each parrot that is entrusted to our care.  We take re-homing seriously, which is why our adoption process takes time.  Please note that not all of our birds are adoptable, and some require much more experience than others.

Requirements for Adoption

To adopt a parrot you must:

  • Be at least 30 years of age.

  • Fill out an adoption form.

  • Successfully fulfill a volunteer requirement of 3 hours per week for 6 months. (See our volunteer page for more information.)

  • Agree to a home visit, so that the WPF can see the environment you would provide for a parrot (either a board member or a senior volunteer must live in your area to provide the home visit).

  • Agree to a probation period to ensure you and your new feathered family member are a great match.

Why Must I Volunteer to Adopt a Parrot?

Volunteering at the Foundation is the most important component in our adoption process. We want to make sure you have taken the time to make an informed decision, and we want to get to know you. It is essential that you get to know the unique personality and needs of the parrot you are considering for adoption.

We need you to demonstrate that you are willing and able to commit the time required to care for a parrot. In addition, by getting to know you, we can assess your preparedness and knowledge of the special requirements of parrots and determine whether you will make a compatible companion for one of our parrots.
